Hi. Thanks for coming to the interview today. It’s nice to meet you.

Well, thank you.

To begin with, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?

Okay. Um, yeah. I’ve always been interested in teaching in a language program like this, and uh, I graduated with a degree in English and psychology eight years ago, . Yeah, and uh then I landed my first job overseas in Japan.

Oh, wow. That’s pretty impressive. What did you do there? What kind of work?

Well, I worked full time, um, for a private language school in Tokyo for the first two years, and then I found a job at a community college.

Oh really? So, exactly what did you do in your work there then?

Well, I taught English and, uh, culinary arts.

You taught cooking classes?

Well, well, I know it sounds like an unusual combination, but I completed a program in culinary arts before I got my, uh, English and psychology degrees.

Oh, Wow. You’ve done a lot, haven’t you? [ Yeah. ] So, what exactly, um, how did you teach and what exactly did you do?

Well, um, many of my students wanted to become chefs in restaurants, or they wanted to start their own restaurants, uh, and in our area, there were many, uh, tourists tourist spots.

A lot of tourists came to that particular area, and so with English, they would be able to communicate not only with suppliers, you know things that they need for restaurant’s food and so forth, but also with their customers, and so I taught them English and cooking at the same time.

Wow. That’s, that’s pretty impressive. That’s interesting.  Oh, I bet. So, why did you return to the United States? How long have you been back?

I’ve been back for, uh, probably about a year now.

Okay, so what brought you back then?

Well, one of my former students opened a sushi restaurant, uh, in town, and he asked me to work with him.

Really? What’s the name of the restaurant?

Well, it’s called Flying Sushi. Have you ever heard of it?

Yes, I’ve been there. Their food is fabulous; it’s top-notch. It’s really hard just to get a reservation there.

I know, and uh, well, I work there two weeknights, and uh, and then . . 

So, two nights a week you’re working there still?

Right, right, but then, but . . . I want to return to teaching. I’ve also been working as a therapist at a treatment center for teenagers struggling with depression and other mental health disorders.

Oh, wow, that would be a really interesting job.

It is, it is.

Wow. You have such a wide range of experience. Uh, you know, to be honest, we have fifteen people who are applying for this position.

You’ve got quite a background, but why don’t you tell me three reasons why you would be the best person for this job.

Um, well, first of all, uh, I understand that different students have different learning styles, and for that reason, I have used iPads, video, music, cooking, drama, role plays, and games to reach every student. 

And second, I have a background in academic and psychological counseling and advising  . . . skills that are often needed, you know, in working with international students.

Yeah, that could be really useful.

Yeah, so you know, many of them struggle with, uh, emotional turmoil, you know, home sickness . . . .

Yeah, coming to a new place . . .

Right, so making the transition can be very overwhelming, and uh . . .

Good. So, what would you say would be a third reason?

And finally, I speak four different languages . . . .

Four? Wow! What languages do you speak?

Well, I speak Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese at an advanced levelAnd I also speak Arabic at a high-intermediate level.

That’s very, very impressive. You do have an impressive resume.

So, have you found a job yet?

No, but, I have a few leads, so things are looking up.

But isn’t that what you always say?

Well . . . uh . . . this time is different.

What are you looking for this time, then?

Actually, I want to work for a Web hosting company.

What would you do there?

Well, in a nutshell, Web hosting companies provide space for people to store and run their Websites.

Does it sound like I know what I’m talking about?

Oh, yeah, sort of.

Well, And then, sort of? Well, they allow people to run their Web sites without having to buy and maintain their own servers, and I’d like to work in technical support, you know, helping customers resolve computer-related problems with their sites.

And you know I’m a good communicator.

So, how’s the pay for that kind of job?

Well, most people l know start out with a very reasonable salary; you can earn pay increases depending on your performance.

So, what about benefits?

Oh, the benefits are pretty good. They provide health insurance, two weeks (of) paid vacation a year, and opportunities for advancement.

And in the end, I’d like to work in a management position. You know, sitting back, enjoying the view out of the twentieth-story window of the office building. Something like that.

Well, is there any long-term job security in a job like that?

Uhh. That’s hard to tell. I mean, the Internet is booming, and these kinds of companies are sprouting up everywhere, which is a good thing, but just like the dot-com era, you never know how long things will last.

Well, have you ever thought about going back to school to improve your job skills?

Wait, wait. What are you suggesting?

Well, you know, more training might help you land a better job.

Wh . . . wh . . . Are you trying to say something about my current job? I mean, is there something going on here? I mean, what are you saying?

You know, you did drop out of college.

I know, I know, but I don’t know. I’m just seeing my current job at McDonalds as a step up.

Yeah, but, you know, I don’t have the resources to go back to school at the moment; however, the job I am looking at will pay for some classes after I have been with the company for six months.

Well, it looks like you have things planned out this time.
